The Girl Who Listened Too Well

People said they wanted a good listener. But she was too good. Faced with her rapt attention, each person she spoke to quickly faltered and then fell silent, in the knowledge that what they were saying was unworthy of the reaction it elicited from her.

She tried feigning tiredness, boredom, or preoccupation; but her genuine interest could not be concealed for long and then conversations unravelled the same as always.

After many years she met a man who never spoke, expressing his desires only through smiles, frowns, and subtle gestures.

They fell in love; and lived happily ever after.
