The Music Room contains a few compositions that I have written at various times. They're mostly classical, and they're also mostly rather odd. Do feel free to download them (they're in Word format) and have a look. In the unlikely event that you'd like to perform any of them, well then I'll probably die of shock, but could you also please ask my permission, by e-mailing me at mirabehn@livejournal.com. I can't think off-hand of any circumstances under which I'd say "no", but I'd like to be asked, all the same. :)
I Don't Know What It Is About Him
This is a setting of three medieval religious poems, originally written for unaccompanied SSA choir and soprano and alto soloists, as part of my A Level music coursework. I then adapted it for SATB, soprano and bass soloists for the Hertfordshire County Youth Choir, who performed the first piece - "Whit was His Naked Brest" - at an Easter Concert. The whole work was performed by Pembroke College Chapel Choir, at a Lent Concert and on tour in Northern Ireland.
This is a song for soprano/mezzo-soprano voice and piano, setting my own lyrics. I wrote it for my GCSE music coursework, aged 14, and at that time had grand plans of writing a musical or operetta of Hamlet. In the end I only completed four pieces for it, three of which made up my GCSE coursework, and this is by far the best. The voice character is Ophelia, and it's set just after the "get thee to a nunnery" scene. At times when looking back at this piece I've winced at the lyrics, but now I find them rather touching - their awkwardness seems appropriate to the character somehow. I still sing this from time to time, and I'm still proud that I wrote it, especially as I was so young.
