I'm No Heroine

She was seventeen when her drama teacher told her she wouldn’t be an actress.

"You’re good, Claudia Jean," he said. "But you're tall. You’ll never play the roles you want to play. Go do something else. Go be the heroine."

She wept into her pillow that night, but in the morning her eyes were dry, and she filled in a form for UC Berkeley.

She is a woman now, vigorous and beautiful, and she loves every inch of herself. Her stage is bigger than Broadway, and though no one’s tall enough for this role, still she fills it. Sometimes she knows she’s the best White House press secretary in a decade.

She isn’t the heroine. Maybe she never will be. Right now she doesn’t give a damn.
