Another big film soundtrack from Vangelis, held together with yet another of his memorable sweeping orchestral themes. The movie, directed by Ridley Scott, was about Spanish Catholic explorers finding the Americas. So, suitably, this time his lush arrangements are coloured with huge choruses chanting in Latin, Spanish guitar strumming and exotic American pipe noises. The main theme "Conquest of Paradise" and some of the other tracks such as "Deliverance" and "Hispaniola" are powerful pieces that hold up well on their own. But listened to as a whole it tends to wash over you. That's fine for background listening, but epic wide-screen music like this is much better appreciated with an epic wide-screen movie to stare at and wash over you at the same time.
