A neat and tidy compilation of Vangelis's better known pieces, either themes from films or very film-like pieces. Vangelis's trademark is that huge swelling keyboard string sound and the throbbing basslines, which define the music writer's cliché "cinematic" - broad, spacious and perfectly timed. Everybody knows "Chariots of Fire", but just as impressive is his music for "Blade Runner". This soundtrack is represented by its three best pieces, the dynamic "End Titles", the wistful "Love Theme" and a beautifully quiet and fragmentary "Memories of Green". Lesser known tunes of note include the titles from the mutiny movie "The Bounty", the chillingly grandiose theme from the film-documentary "Antarctica" and a couple of highly colourful oriental soundscapes from the album "China", tasteful and authentic sounding. Although some tracks such as "Missing" and "La Petite Fille De La Mer" might lay on the new age prettiness too thickly for some tastes. Overall this collection gives a perfect introduction to Vangelis's gift for a great tune, impeccably orchestrated.
