Not long out of public school, Genesis released this pleasant second album. It's dominated by the twelve string guitar of Anthony Phillips (who left after this one) and other soft textures such as piano and flute. The six tracks meander along mellowly, the tunes and harmonies are attractive, if not as inspired or focused as this album's successors. Some particularly nice moments include Gabriel's expressive singing at the beginning of "Looking for Someone", and the harmonies in "Stagnation". "The Knife" is a strong prog-rock anthem that was a live favourite.
