Virgin, 1989

An exotic and varied set of instrumental and ambient titbits. "Words with the Shaman" is particularly distinctive, combining a repeated percussion pattern, Jon Hassell's distinctive muted trumpet, and some Arabic-sounding vocals. The other monumental piece, "Steel Cathedrals" is more restrained and reflective, backed by a countinuous throbbing beat. A couple of shorter tracks show Sylvian venturing into more avant-garde territory. "The Stigma of Childhood, Kin" features some odd wiggly guitar twangs, while "A Brief Conversation" is an abstract atonal experiment, with piano and swirling synth noises.
