David Sylvian and Holger Czukay - Plight and Premonition

Album cover

  1. Plight (The Spiralling of Winter Ghosts) (18:29)
  2. Premonition (Giant Empty Iron Vessel) (16:21)

Virgin, 1988

The first of Sylvian's two ambient collaborations with Holger Czukay from Can. This is probably the more "difficult" of the pair. Like any true ambient, it's all about slowly shifting soundscapes, with no conventional tunes or rhythms to focus on. The first side has washes of dark, floaty noise created by electronics and guitar. Only occasionaly does anything resembling a melody poke out, on a pan-pipe sound. The second side is more bright and ethereal - with splashes of high piano emerging from the ambient mush.
